Your Dallas Mavericks

Dallas is returning this year to the season with pretty much the same line up it had last year. The question on everyone’s mind is can they make it happen in the playoff without choking again? Can Dirk play when it matters?  To me, these are stupid questions. I’m from a baseball town where the best players played the worst in the playoffs. In my opinion I would rather make the playoffs every year and have a shot than give up on star players who seem to not be able to get it done year after year. Many people forget, especially Yankee fans, that these are the same players you had to lean on all season just to make it to the post season. What I noticed about Dallas from the finals and most of last year, they stopped running 80% of the time and became a half court team 50% of the time. Now it is their running that got them the best record in the league and wearing out of opponents that got them over the top. For some reason they give up on that philosophy in the big games and seem to get dragged through the mud for a couple of quarters turn on the jets but have nothing left because they’ve been grinding for so long. Avery needs to hit that gas pedal and let them just go balls out and take down most of their opponents. Let them grind with the playoff teams and when the playoff teams come to the dance, start the engine and run them out of the building because they are expected to grind it out again.  In other words, Avery, leave them the hell alone and call the time out 10 seconds out of the half because the other team scored a bucket too fast and let them play. They have the offensive legs and shooters to run and gun but not the bodies and foul shooting to play half court 75% of the time. When running they are the most exciting team in basketball because they are good at it. When slowed to a half court questions of Dirk’s toughness and drive come into question. We all know he wants to win and we all know he can if given the chance to play like they do all regular season.  I’m predicting a year of 61 wins for these guys and possibly a 2 or 3 seed. There will be maybe one team with a better record but it’s unclear who. The parody this year in the west will be hard to predict because there will be 6 teams playing for the 7-8 seeds with above .500 records. It’s going to be tough but Avery’s coaching job should be more like Phil, sit and watch, the players will do the rest.
